It’s really easy to tell ourselves, “I’ll do that when I feel like it”, or “I’m not in the mood”, or “I can’t, I don’t feel motivated”. The problem is, motivation doesn’t often just appear. Yes it’s true, sometimes we might wake up feeling motivated and raring to go, but on days where that isn’t the case (the majority of the time) we wonder why we can’t ‘just feel motivated’!

I thought this cute little grasshopper (ok, yes, maybe I’m weird for thinking it’s cute) was a good metaphor for what I wanted to talk about today. Pacing. As my husband and I sat in the tall grass relaxing in the sun, a few of them landed on us and were perfectly still for a few moments, and then out of nowhere jumped what must be about 50 times the length of their own body! And I thought… “I wonder how much energy it needs to save up to jump that far?”

My husband and I recently went for a few days wild camping in Scotland. No electricity, no people, no home comforts.

My comfort orientated usual self was determined to pack everything but the kitchen sink, making sure we wouldn’t be stuck in the middle of nowhere without everything we needed. I was saying to myself “I am the queen of planning, packing, and organising… I got this!”

But when we got there, something shifted.

When we find out what we want, and we want it intensely, it puts pressure on us to get it, fast! This can be motivating, but we have to check in with ourselves about how we feel about the journey to achieving it. This is exactly where I found myself over the last few days with my business…
